The term Majolica, Italian for painted earthenware, derives from Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands if Spain, which in the early MIddle Ages supplied Italy with painted ceramic articles molded from Spanish clay from Spanish craftmen still heavily influenced by Islamic art and culture. This art from quickly spread throughout the Italian peninsula. It was adopted and transformed by craftmen according to local customs in the early fifteenth century in towns such as Deruta, Montelupo, Faenza and Gubbio. Theses towns are still producing splendid Italian majolica. Some of the patterns and colors from centuries past, such as Raffaellesco (Dragon) and Arabesco, are still produced today using the same methods in many of the ceramic centers of Italy.
We import our ceramics from thoses same aeras including Deruta and Gubbio in the Umbria region, Montelupo outside of Florence, Santo Stefano and Caltagirone in Sicily and Grottaglie in the Apulia region.
